Most of us overcome self sabotage thinking we are bettering ourselves. We do that by being extra-harsh to ourselves. People assume that by being tough, they’d be able to finally get their life back on track. The next time, they won’t forget to charge their phone or will go out of their way to pack their lunch at night before going to bed no matter how tired or sleepy. These things may seem like the person is trying to bring discipline to their life.

However, it can have the opposite effect if they push themselves too hard. Not going to bed because they have to cook and then pack lunch could affect on the next day. When you go to work, you might not be as productive.

Being compassionate to yourself is the first step to prevent yourself from self-sabotage. People don’t understand that being tough is a form of self-sabotage. You may be tough to yourself for the first one month, but then you could relapse and stop caring about anything and everything.

Try to ease into the discipline and avoid judging yourself if you don’t do what you had to do the first time. Be understanding of your needs.

Recognize Self-Sabotaging Behaviors

Once you have recognized your self-sabotaging behaviors, it is time to work on them. You need to determine if the self-sabotaging action has any real purpose. For instance, if you want to stop drinking too much on the weekends, understand that it could be to alleviate the stress from work. Instead of punishing and judging yourself for drinking too much, try to work on your stress by taking a break from work.

If you feel you’re gaining weight, try to add one healthy meal per day instead of cutting down on food and starving yourself. You can start walking in the park every day. Take it easy, understand your problem’s root cause, and then work on it.

Similarly, if you feel like you are procrastinating a lot, understand why? Is it because you are afraid of failure, or is it because of fear of success?

Try to think of ideas that will bring positivity to your life, and replace self-sabotaging behaviors.
